Instrument Centre for indirect Calorimetri and stable Isotopes

Tekniske specifikationer
Centrets vigtigste faciliteter er placeret på forskningsstationen Rørrendegård i Taastrup, og består af udstyr til måling af næringsstoffer og energi metabolisme på helkrops-niveau.

  • Indirect calorimetry system - Respiration unit (open air-circuit principle) with double chambers for animals from 1 to 5 kg body weight and double chambers for animals from 5 to 250 kg, for long-term measurements of gas exchange, substrate oxidation and energy expenditure.
  • Micro-calorimeter “Micro-Oxymax” (open and close air-circuit principle) with 4 chambers for measurements of gas exchange and energy expenditure in embryos and small size animals from 1 to 500 g.
  • IRIS® Infra-Red Isotope Analyser System for measuring 13C in expired air.
  • Equipment for digestibility and quantitative protein and energy balance studies with mice, rats, mink, foxes, dogs, poultry, pigs, goat, sheep, liamas, horses and cattle.

Anvendelse af udstyr
The data, which can be achieved by indirect calorimetry and stable isotope measurements provides basic information about nutrient and energy metabolism at the whole body level. The following can be measured:

From indirect calorimetry and nutrient/energy balances:

  • Digestibility
  • Oxidation of protein, carbohydrate and fat
  • Energy expenditure
  • Retention of protein, fat and energy
  • Utilization of nutrients for different life processes under a variety of factors; genetic, health status, physical training, dietary composition feed/food additives, environmental conditions, etc.

 

From stable isotope technique:

  • Gastric emptying
  • Liver- and Pancreas-Function
  • Lactase deficiency
  • Helicobacter pylori,
  • Total heat production

From combined indirect calorimetry and stable isotope techniques:

  • Protein and energy metabolism
  • Amino acid decarboxylation and oxidation rates
  • Fatty acids oxidation, lipogenesis and lipolysis
  • Gluconeogenesis and glycogenesis
  • Glucose oxidation and glycogenolysis
